Reading through the Scottish Liberal Democrats Manifesto on transport there are a few things to highlight, not least a commitment to introduce a ‘Fairer Fares Charter’.
“We will introduce a Fairer Fares Charter to put the interests of rail passengers first. This will require fair and understandable ticket pricing to help customers find the best deal available…”
The pricing system for rail tickets if full of different fares based on time of travel and distance to be travelled. My experience is that by shopping around (if you’ve the time) you can get cheaper tickets by breaking your journey into separate legs even using the same train!
Tickets from North Berwick to Glasgow can be reduced by buying 1 ticket from N Berwick to Edinburgh and another from Edinburgh to Glasgow. A recent day trip to Dundee worked out £10 cheaper by buying a return between N Berwick and Edinburgh and 2 single tickets between Edinburgh and Dundee (one each way) rather than a return ticket for the entire journey.
The commitment to getting rid of these anomalies is most welcome.
