Why not store waste at Torness?

The Scottish Executive recently announced a consultation on “Higher Activity Waste” in which it wishes to keep nuclear waste on the site where it is generated. This ignores the fact the UK Government was working (?) on a UK-wide strategy.

But, the UK has been prevaricating for a long time on what to do with nuclear waste from it’s power stations. Other countries have gone ahead with thier own schemes, some have decided to store it deep underground in geologically safe holes. Others may have dumped it in deep water at sea.

Some local politician’s appear to have made knee-jerk reactions along the lines of “not in my back yard”. Let’s get it straight, nuclear waste is generated at Torness, why not continue to keep it there until a ‘safe’ disposal method is agreed at UK level. This means the Scottish Executive working with the UK Government not against it.
