Fairtrade and the Election

The coming Westminster Election is a great opportunity for Fairtrade supporters to get political parties and their candidates to show their support for Fairtrade and trade justice to help end poverty.

Trade has the potential to lift millions of people out of poverty. But, developing countries rarely benefit from current trade rules that are mainly in favour of developed countries. We need an internation trading system that supports instead of undermining internaltion developments such as the Millennium Development Goals.

The UK government could encourage and support all public bodies to make Fairtrade an automatic part of their catering and supply contracts. The public sector apparently spends 13% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product on procurement – imagine the difference this could make if more of those choises were Fairtrade.
