Climate Change, Global Warming, does it exist?

According to a couple of “flat earthers” at last nights One Planet election hustings held in Haddington – no! The science behind this is not proven and certainly not man-made was the claim.

In one sense I agree with them but believe they are misguided and muddled in their thinking. Instead of talking about climate change and/or global warming we should actually be looking at man’s activity on the biosphere and the damage that is causing, call it environmental damage instead.

This year is the International Year of Biodiversity and what it is proposing to do is get everyone to look at the place in which you live and your impact on that environment (or biosphere). Some people may think that biodiversity is all about plants and animals, Well, you’d be wrong.

Us, human beings, have the biggest impact of any species on biodiversity. Our day to day activities, travel to work, buying food and drink, going to the cinema or theatr or out for a meal, purchasing a take-away etc all have impacts on our biosphere (biosphere is just another word for environment, it can be your house, your street, village or town, country or the planet as a whole). We affect the biospehere in numerous ways. These activities cause damage. There are more pollutants in the atmosphere and on the ground as a result of our activities than there were 200 years ago. I believe everyone will own up to that – including the “flat earthers”. These activities may or may not be leading to climate change – I don’t care. I do care that we are damaging our biosphere (the planet as a whole) and we need to find ways of changing our lifestyles.

If you take a look at this web site you will find a list of things that you can do.
