Devo-Max is not the answer

Devo-Max is not the same as an in/out option on the political and administrative future of Scotland. This option would signal the end of the United Kingdom as presently constructed. Devo-max is aimed at people living in Scotland who are feart of independence and to scare timid unionists into campaigning for this without realising the consequences.
Devo-max won’t save the Union. Devo-max means the end of sending MPs to Westminster. After all, if all important decisions affecting Scotland are being taken at Holyrood what’s the point of sending any MPs to London? All UK political parties will have to acknowledge this is a very likely consequence of pursuing this option. For Labour it probably means no longer winning at Westminster unless its part of a multi-party coalition. For the Conservatives they’ll back it as it means they’ll be more or less in permanent administration.
The Liberal Democrat policy has been and still is for a “federal” structure in the UK. That means devolution in England. That should happen as part and parcel of a review of the political and administrative arrangements for the UK as a whole. And the nationalist party in Scotland will have to hold their referendum afterwards.
