The Scottish Parliament is creating a network of protected areas for Scotland’s amazing marine life. That’s good right?
Not entirely. There is a risk that whales and dolphins will not be included. Scotland’s whales and dolphins are remarkable, they deserve protection and they need your help. I’d really like people to consider signing this petition (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/800/056/933/).
In the Marine Act (Scotland) 2010, approved nem con at Holyrood, ALL parties agreed there should be an “ecologically coherent network” of Marine Protected Areas. But under the proposal being discussed by the Scottish Parliament so far, there will be no MPAs for cetaceans.
How the hell you can have an ecologically “coherent” network that leaves out sea mammals, I don’t know – especially as many of these mammal species are seriously endangered. There are also really serious problems with the proposed protection for sea birds, which adds to the lack of coherence.
Please help to persuade the Scottish Parliament that they need to do MORE or they are going to look foolishly incoherent on this one, and it is Scotland’s wildlife that will suffer – every bit as much as our international reputation.
