The Liberal Democrats have started hosting web seminars or Q&As for members to hear direct from Ministers and ask questions. However, they are using propitiatory software to do so.
The system they are using is from Citrix (GoToMeeting) and will only work on a PC running Microsoft Windows or an Apple Mac. Anyone running a Linux PC can’t join in as you require to install a little bit of software to make it work. If you want to use a mobile device or tablet you can use an iPhone or Tablet running the Android system and install an app.
There is a rival product that will do the exact same thing but requires no extra bits of software, everything runs in an up to date web browser and offers the same ‘sign-in’ security options. This comes from Cisco and is called Webex.
As I run a Linux PC I am am disenfranchised from participating. Although I can view using an app on my android tablet it doesn’t have the same functions available as on a PC, it’s limited. I’m having to give up on the latest web Q&A as a result.
As this is a party that is supposed to believe in openness, transparency and democracy, why can’t it use “open” software?
Why can’t the party use proper software!
