The 2010 Election

By the end of the local part meeting in February 2010 I was starting to regret my decision to become Convenor. I had agreed to become the legal agent for the General Election but not the Campaign Manager.

However, one member of the committee tried to get me to do things I hadn’t agreed to. this carried on from February until the end of the campaign. The candidate was a problem in living in Birmingham and not responding to requests for information. A proposed split Freepost mailing was altered as he failed to provide proper material and I had to compromise with a generic leaflet. The main leaflet caused problems with the format and no-one could tell me properly what it was meant to be. I had to contact a printer and refer to Mike Moore’s leaflet to get a quote that I could then go to other printers with. Then this committee member told me she didn’t use the walk routes from the EARS system when sorting our deliveries for other people. I tell you, if the mug in my hand had still been full of water at that point it would have ended up all over her.

The highlight of the campaign for me was actually the day I spent down in Eyemouth the Friday before the poll. It was really enjoyable and I had more fun that day than in the previous 3 weeks.

I was glad when the campaign was over and the election returns submitted. I don’t intend doing it again at local party level.
