Things don’t change much do they?

I’ve been going through some old negatives recently of when I campaigned for places on the local councils, some of which I’ve uploaded onto my gallery, and checked my old Focus leaflets. In the process I came across 3 where the subject matter is still relevant now.

This first one Tantallon Focus Spring 1994 [PDF] had as the lead story, ‘Keep Our Police Local’. Now where have I heard that recently? OK, the context is slightly different to the current election campaign for Holyrood where the Scot Lib Dems are arguing to prevent the centralisation of the police service but, I said back then there was a need to “take account of LOCAL feelings, knowledge and experience.”

This next one North Berwick Focus Jan 1995 [PDF]is the back page of a leaflet delivered in early 1995. The back page article was about ‘Warmer Homes’. About energy conservation and proposals to ensure local authorities achieved 30% energy savings. In theory this has been superceded by the Climate Change Act but, how much has actually been done to achieve ‘warmer homes?’

The final one Thank You Focus [PDF]is from after the Council election in May 1995. My job role changed immediately after the election so the leaflet was written quickly. This back page article was all about changing the way our parliamentary system works. About voting reform, devolution etc. Yes, we have devolution since that piece was written, we’ve changed the voting system for electing Councillors but, Westminster still hasn’t changed much has it? That’s why we’ve a referendum on 5th May, to kick–start that process of change.
