Liberal Democrats in Europe produce a regular newsletter that lists what Lib Dem MEPs are up to. I was struck by one of the recent articles which posed the question: how healthy is your favourite fruity drink?
That’s what one Lib Dem MEP asked juice makers. Euro MEPs recently voted in favour of stricter rules on what makes up a fruit juice drink (what goes in it) and demand stricter labelling. The aim is to improve the quality of drinks and to ensure you know which ones contain extra sugar or sweeteners. This will be a boon to diabetics. Anyone with health issues such as diabetes or allergies will know what has been put in the drink.
The manufacturers will have to state what juices the drink is made up of and how much of each. It begs the question, is that orange juice really orange or a disguised mango? There will be a transition period of 18 months to allow manufacturers to get their act together and applies to all products regardless of where in the world it has been made.
