What is it with cyclists these days?

I’ve seen more and more cyclists going the wrong way on our streets recently. Yes it’s the summer and yes that means more people using a bike to get around but, don’t they know the Highway Code? Don’t the know it applies to them in the same way as every other road user. Why do they persist in cycling along the pavement?

A couple of years ago I caught one eejit cycling along the pavement in Princes Street in Edinburgh. I managed to collar him and gave him a telling off – much to the pleasure of other pedestrians. I’ve seen parents lead their kids the wrong way along some of the streets. OK North Berwick isn’t as busy as the cities but it’s the principle. As they grow up will these kids think it’s alright to go the wrong way? And woe betide you if you try and accost the parent over this!

What can be done? Well, it about time every cyclist had a certificate or licence – much like a driving licence – to prove they’ve achieved some sort of proficiency on the bike and are fully aware of the Highway Code. In addition, I’d want every cyclist to have insurance in case of accidents. If your walking or driving along and a cyclist hits you to your injury or damage how to you make a claim against them?

Unfortunately its the growing minority of cyclists that make things bad for the declining majority.
